One of the toughest things about getting fit is getting around to your workout. We all have busy days and tough schedules. Well, most of us do, and to be honest sometimes when you have too much time on your hands getting to the gym is even harder to do (for some odd reason.) So what are the tricks for getting it in everyday? I know three.
First, what type of a person are you? I mean, are you a morning person or a night owl? I like getting up early in the morning and knocking out my workout. It gives me energy and a positive outlook to start the day. Some people can't even contemplate getting up an hour early to do a workout. If that's not you, don't do it. Overcoming a personal preference and then dragging your butt to the gym is not going to add up to a wonderful regular routine, and that's tip number one. Make your workout the same time every day. It takes 21 days to make a habit, so pull on your tenny's and drink a large glass of "By god I'm going to do it" and force yourself into the gym (at home or wherever it is) every day. That routine will serve you.
Second, find a workout partner. This person doesn't have to be someone you really work out with, but should be someone who will commit to contacting you and meeting you at the gym, so you are there at the same time. This accountability will help on those days when you are just dragging a little and, left on your own, would whine and say I can just skip a day. Your partner is there to move and motivate you, and you do them same for them. (By the way, skipping a day is perfectly acceptable, unless that happens more than three times month - then it's turning into a bad habit.)
Third, and this is for anyone who works or plays on a computer, use the alarm feature on your e-mail program. Most programs have some sort of calendar that lets you make appointments. Use that feature and schedule your workout like any other appointment you would make. It is an appointment, and it vital to your vim, vigor and ongoing health. It is probably the only appointment you have which can lengthen your healthy lifespan and improve your self esteem. Is that an appointment that can be postponed? No.
Remember you being healthy and fit affects not only you, but everyone in your life. Your health is something that is a part of you right now and at every moment of your life. It affects your relationships, your leisure time and your family. Go to the gym first to benefit yourself and then to benefit everyone else. But GO!
